Frequently Asked Questions

A home energy assessment can help you understand the whole picture of your home’s energy use and to determine whether you need to make improvements or repairs to increase your home’s energy efficiency.

All You Need To Know

Boiler and insulation grants are part of the Energy Company Obligation (ECO); a government scheme funded by utility companies (such as Just Home Improvement).

These grants help households with low income in England, Wales and Scotland to become more energy efficient and lower their heating bills. Eligible households can apply for a grant to install a new A-rated boiler using a Registered Boiler Grant Installer.

For a boiler grant, as long as you receive a qualifying benefit and you own your own home, and your boiler is over 5 years old you might be eligible for a boiler grant to replace your old boiler for a brand new one.

You must own your own home to apply for the ECO scheme.

You must also be in receipt of one of the following benefits:

  • Armed Forces Independence Payment
  • Attendance Allowance
  • Carer’s Allowance
  • Child Benefit*
  • Child Tax Credit
  • Constant Attendance Allowance
  • Disability Living Allowance
  • Income Support
  • Pension Credit (Guarantee)
  • Employment and support allowance (income-related)
  • Jobseeker’s allowance (Income-based)
  • Income Support
  • Industrial injuries disablement benefit
  • Mobility supplement
  • Personal independence payment
  • Severe disablement allowance
  • Universal credit
  • War Pension Mobility Supplement
  • Working tax credit

If you receive one of these qualifying benefits (excluding Child Benefit) you will be eligible regardless of household income, so no means-testing is required for applications.

* Note if Child Benefit is the only qualifying benefit you receive, you will also need to meet income rules for Child Benefit detailed here.

After you apply online for a grant you’ll be contacted to check you meet all the necessary criteria. They’ll also check what benefits you receive and confirm your status (whether you own your home).

You will also be asked for the make and model of your current boiler, and for insulation you’ll be asked about existing insulation and possibly details about your EPC.

Energy Company Obligation (ECO) 4 is out in full force and the government’s more determined than ever to eradicate fuel poverty through its Affordable Warmth Scheme.

So focused in fact, that the Carbon Emissions Reductions Obligation (CERO) was dropped from ECO4 entirely, allocating 100% of ECO4’s funding to the Affordable Warmth Scheme. To put that into context, the Affordable Warmth Scheme previously took up 70% of ECO2t’s budget, which roughly amounted to £450m per year in free boiler schemes and home insulation solutions

The number of properties that can be upgraded with heating and insulation measures will inevitably rise in parallel to this massive influx of funding.

To increase its delivery rates, the Affordable Warmth Scheme’s eligibility criteria has been expanded. Child benefit and Disability benefits have been added to the current eligibility criteria as seen below.
